MIT-Newbury Men's Basketball December 1, 2012 : MIT turned it around nicely after Thursday's loss to Rhode Island College with a 91-76 victory over an athletic Newbury College team. Will Tashman led the Cardinal and Grey with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists, with four other Engineers in double figures, marking a sharp turnaround from other games this season. The real difference was in the intensity and balance. Newbury wasn't getting uncontested looks anywhere, and MIT was fighting for every board and second chance. The real story of the game: MIT won in the paint 40-24, 42-27 on the boards (14-8 O), 19-9 second chance, 34-11 from the bench, and 5-2 men in double figures. If the Cardinal and Grey can post numbers like those consistently, we'll be fine. Also on Facebook

MIT-Curry Men's Basketball November 24, 2012 : MIT defeated the Curry Colonels 71-63 in a hard-fought contest against an excellent team. After an initial Mitch Kates 3, MIT trailed until a run midway through the second half, at one point going up by 11. Curry refused to fold, however, and the waning minutes of the contest saw some spirited ball on both sides, although MIT's lead never fell below 5 points. Also on Facebook.

MIT-UW Whitewater NCAA semis March 16, 2012 : Unfortunately, MIT's run came to an end last night, losing 71-56 to a buzzsaw of a UW-Whitewater squad in the NCAA D3 men's basketball semifinal at Salem, VA. The Engineers fought valiantly, but the combination of the War Hawks' inside force Chris Davis (30 points) and the Cardinal and Gray's lack of the usual shooting touch (21-53, including 3-20 beyond the arc) and difficulties on the boards led to our elimination. Will Tashman led four Engineers in double figures with 15 points (and 14 rebounds, half our total), and Paul Dawson contributed tenacious defense and sound ball control off the bench (0 turnovers in 11 minutes), showing promise as Mitchell Kates's successor after next season. A raucous crowd accompanied the team to the end in its first Final Four appearance, including MIT President Susan Hockfield, all-time leading scorer Jimmy Bartolotta '09, his predecessor David Koch '62, women's basketball coach Sonia Raman, and many other past MIT basketball players. MIT-Harvard Men's Basketball Dec. 31, 2010 : Unfortunately, we (MIT) lost 84-58, but that's what typically happens when a D3 school plays a D1 school, and Harvard has played some nationally ranked teams very tough this year. The women's team turned out in force to support the men, and I will have to return the favor. Some MIT highlights: a nice coast to coast drive off a steal by sophomore point guard Mitch Kates, and a really nice low post move by Will Tashman on Harvard inside force Kyle Casey.
